It's 5am in the morning, the sun is up. I grabbed my back pack and ready my camera. It's time to shoot the Badjaos.
I grew up in a small town, south of Mindanao, Mangagoy, and almost every summer, I get to visit my relatives in Cebu City. It's something special, I get to go to malls and watch movies with my cousins. Stuff an ordinary kid would want to do.
Four hours of foot-burning ride from my town is Butuan City, the nearest port entry to Cebu. And this is where I first see the Badjaos. At first it was nothing, all I see are kids swimming, using their makeshift flippers, staying afloat waving at us. Asking for coins from passengers onboard ships to toss overboard. I think these people are crazy of suckers. But then I realize that they are just their to make money and put food on the table.
My fairy has finally stayed still. And my story about the Badjao has just started.
